NAS Panel Finds ESA Actions In The Delta Scientifically Justified
Scientists side with smelt, salmon protections

March 19, 2010 -- A panel with the National Academy of Sciences says measures taken to save the fish that have also curbed water supplies from the Sacramento-San Joaquin delta are scientifically justified. (Continued on-line at the L.A. Times)
Given this positive review of the science used by NMFS and the US Fish & Wildlife Service, can Congress now find the money to deal with the real problems destroying our fisheries, including:
(1) The collapse of our salmon, steelhead, striped bass and ecology of the Bay-Delta estuary by requiring immediate reductions in the massive amount of water exported from the Delta?
(2) Retiring drainage impaired lands that contaminate the Delta and dedicating the public's water used on this land to help restore the public's fisheries and the Delta’s ecology?
(3) Stop the huge waste of public money on agricultural subsdizies in the Central Valley and dedicate that money to the restoration of the estuary's fisheries damaged by the water development activities on our rivers and streams?
(4) Immediately dedicate the federal funding necessary to implement the National Marine Fishery Service's Central Valley Recovery Plan For Listed Salmon and Steelhead and finally begin to turn the fishery disaster around now?
Phone, E-mail or write your elected representatives and let them know they need to act now! It would certainly help to overcome the propaganda generated by some of the Central Valley Corporate Growers.
