The latest on Paddle to the Sea

by Peter Drekmeier

May 19, 2009 -- Paddle to the Sea got off to a rip-roaring start last weekend!   An international team of 12 hot-shot kayakers ran the class V+ Clavey River, a key tributary of the Tuolumne.  Meanwhile, a whitewater rafting team paddled the Tuolumne at much higher flows than rafters are used to.  Read about it and see pictures at KQED’s climate watch blog: http://blogs.kqed.org/climatewatch/2009/05/18/paddling-to-the-sea/.

Join us for the Grand Finalé of Paddle to the Sea!

Saturday, June 6, Noon - 4:00pm at Aquatic Park in San Francisco

Free Admission.  Join us to welcome our paddlers to the San Francisco Bay and celebrate the completion of Paddle to the Sea.  Live music, barbeque, family fun, and boat rides in historic Aquatic Park, which is the only downtown beach with a protected cove for swimming and boating.  Aquatic Park is adjacent to Ghiradelli Square, with great views of Alcatraz, Coit Tower and the Golden Gate Bridge.  It's easily reached by public transportation: http://tripplanner.transit.511.org/mtc/XSLT_TRIP_REQUEST2?language=en

Volunteers Needed!

We're going to need the help of our dedicated volunteers to pull off the Grand Finalé celebration and welcome the sea kayakers who are completing the final leg of the journey.  There will be a number of volunteer opportunities – both leading up to the event and on the day of the party.  If you can, please join us for a volunteer meeting at the Tuolumne River Trust office on Tuesday, May 26th at 6:00pm.  The address is 111 New Montgomery Street, Suite 205, San Francisco.  Pizza and drinks provided.  Please RSVP to jessie@tuolumne.org.  If you’d like to help out, but can’t make the meeting, or if you have any good suggestions for publicizing the Grand Finalé, please let Jessie know.

Want to Paddle?

There’s still plenty of time to sign up for a leg of Paddle to the Sea.  We’ll be doing several easy days of canoeing and kayaking on the lower Tuolumne in the coming weeks, and we’ll be sea kayaking in the San Francisco Bay on June 5 (experience necessary) and June 6 (no experience necessary).  More info at: http://tuolumneriver.dojiggy.com/.   This is a great opportunity to come and support the river that provides so much of our drinking water here in the Bay Area!  You can also sponsor one of our “Paddle-A-Thon” paddlers here: http://tuolumneriver.dojiggy.com/players/index.cfm?PageID=49118

Hope to see you on June 6, if not sooner!

-Peter
