Will gold dredging be banned?
A ten inch suction dredge as mentioned in this article is truly dredging on an industrial scale and requires an 80 horsepower pump just to operate. A dredge of this size is capable of moving moving five hundred to a thousand cubic feet of gravel and silt each hour, destroying fish habitat and redds, silting up streams, burying insect life and dislodging long quiet deposits of mercury. The DFG permit for operating this dredge is only $47 annually, less than a fishing license with delta stamp and steelhead card. Operations of this kind are as destructive to the environment as were the old water cannons used in the days of hydraulic mining. DON'T feel sorry for these people, they're environmental terrorists.
