Coalition vows to continuously defend the 2009 Central Valley BiOp
August 31, 2009 -- A coalition of fishing and conservation groups led by Earthjustice and including the Northern California Council of the Federation of Fly Fishers, the Pacific Coast Federation of Fishermen Association, Institute for Fisheries Resources, San Francisco Baykeeper, the Winnemem Wintu Tribe, Friends of the River, and Sacramento River Preservation Trust filed an intervention lawsuit on 24 August in defense of protections for numerous endangered Central Valley species under Court attack by various irrigation and farming interests.
From the moment the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) released its Biological Opinion (BiOp) in June 2009 stating that the current system of pumping and diversions jeopardizes the survival of endangered salmon, steelhead, sturgeon, and smelt, corporate agriculture and its elected supporters have made repeated attempts to have the BiOp overturned in one way or another. So far, each of these self-serving efforts has failed. The 800-page BiOp reflects the best available science on the impacts of the California Central Valley Project and State Water System on these endangered and threatened species.
