DOI Hayes responds to NCCFFF letter asking that Central Valley water fisheries decisions be science based

September 21, 2009 -- Dougald Scott, representing the Northern California Council of the Federation of Fly Fishers addressed a letter to Undersecretary David Hayes, Department of the Interior asking that the federal government stand firm in its position that fisheries decisions in California's Central Valley be science based. The July 6th letter pointed out that, "Information being disseminated by San Joaquin agro-industry interests [about California's current drought and water restrictions] is at best disingenuous, but often simply untrue."

In his response, dated September 15, Hayes replied that, "This administration is committed to being part of an effort to develop long term solutions to California's water supply challenges, particularly with regard to the "Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. The Bay-Delta ecosystem is a resource of national importance."

Hayes went on to state that science and the scientific process would be the guide of the Obama administration's policy and that Secretary Salazar stated his first priority, "is to lead the department with openness in decision-making, high ethical standards and respect for scientific integrity."
