Putah Creek Trout and CSPA ask for your support in reg changes for Putah Creek to catch-and-release

by Steve Karr

September  8, 2009 -- At the last meeting of the California Fish and Game Commission, the commission allowed consideration of changes in DFG regulations, making Putah Creek catch-and-release, barbless, artificials only.

The "public comment" period has begun, lasting until mid October, during which we are seeking support from a wide range of stakeholders including fly clubs, businesses, and the general public.

Putah Creek Trout and CSPA have prepared two form fill pages, one for organizations/businesses and one for individuals. All that is required is adding your personal information and clicking the send button. You are encouraged to add your own personal comments as well as those contained in the preformatted letters.

Putah Creek Trout (PCT) and CSPA will make additional presentations (comments) to the Commission regarding support during the October and November Commission meetings.  We welcome all of you to attend the October and November meetings. It demonstrates to the Commission that there is strong interest and concern for the fishery on the Creek. The meetings are held at the Yolo Fliers country club just west of Woodland.  The meeting dates are October 1, and November 4-5.  It's expected that the Commission will make its decision at the December meeting, and if successful, the new regs would take effect in March.

On September 19, PCT is sponsoring a trash collection site as part of the Coastal Commission's international cleanup day.  We will be responsible for the area between Access 5 and the dam.   The cleanup is scheduled 9 a.m.-12 noon, meeting at Access 5 and spreading out from there.  Please plan to attend if you can.  An RSVP would be most helpful to know how much of the 4.5 miles we can cover. We are providing gloves and bags to pick up trash and recyclables. We will provide water, but bring a water bottle.

PTC is tentatively scheduling its next General meeting for October.  We will be discussing plans for new regulations signage and how to approach and deal with the expected and ongoing problems with fishing over redds during the fall/winter spawning period.  We also plan to revisit/introduce our conservation and education plans for the coming year.
